MSH PRe-release

Our Marvel super Heroes pre-release turnout was not nearly as abysmal as turnout was for our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pre-releases as we have done double those numbers so far, really surprising several of my staff members who expected a redux of the TMNT pre-release attendance but attendance is  far below the numbers we saw for Edge of Eternities or even Aetherdrift.  Several of the players at our event even commented they did not care for playing with the Universes Beyond sets, they just liked the opportunity to come out and play in a pre-release. Most of the Marvel Super Heroes buyers we have had so far did not show up for either pre-release event. People who play Magic generally prefer playing with the in-universe sets. Those who want to collect, rip packs for views on social media, and find valuable cards they can sell to someone else gravitate towards the Universes Beyond sets. Incidentally, cards, even graded ones, only have value as long as someone else is willing to pay you more for them than you paid and eventually this nostalgia driven boom will come to an end.

Marvel RPG

Marvel has announced the Marvel Multiverse RPG for release in 2022 . Not suprisingly, there will be three differnt covers. I am just suprised there are  not 7 or more and that one is a 1:25 variant copy.

By my count this is at least the third Marvel RPG that has released.  TSR did one back in the 1980s. Wizard Publications put one out about 10 years ago and  Margaret Weiss Productions released one about 5 or so years ago. There may have been one or two others  but if there are, I do not remember them.

The MCU and super heroes in general, have always been hard to replicate in RPG form On one hand, you have characters with power off the charts like Superman and Thanos and on the other hand you have "street level" heroes like Elektra and Robin. How do you make a balanced system that allows players to create both types of characters?  I still think Champions was one of the best RPG systems for accomplihing this and even it would not easly let you make a Hulk-type character.

RPG of the Week Sentinel Comics

Sentinels of the Multiverse has proved a very popular deckbuilding game over the past few years but we have had a number of people ask "But what about an RPG?" Well, those people now have their question answered as Greater Than Games releases Sentinel Comics:  The Role Playing Game in a $19.99 13 book Starter Set (13 books!). The Starter Set fills in the gap between the end of the deckbuilding game and the full RPG releasing next year. It comes with booklets for each of the main heroes in the deckbuilding game, giving background on the character and explaining the character sheet as well as a Gameplay Guide. Help rebuild Megalopolis and reunite the hero teams of the world while fighting off the villains threatening us all. Sentinel Comics is the first print format RPG to hit the market since MWP released the Marvel Super Hero RPG about 5 years ago.

Marvel Super Heroes RPG

You may have heard the announcement that Margaret Weis Productions lost/gave up the license for the Marvel Super Heroes Role-Playing Game.  It appears that sales of books in the line did not justify continuation of the licensing agreement.  According to MWP, sales of Civil War, the final supplement in the line, were decent but not large enough to justify renewing the license.  Fortunately for Disney and Marvel, movies based upon Marvel characters have proven extremely successful, thus allowing the companies to  ask for ever increasing licensing fees from companies.  Unfortunately, most RPG companies, due to the fact that RPGs are not particularly lucrative, do not have large enough amounts of capital available to purchase/renew such a license, especially when sales have not justified it.

Firefly may prove a better license as it costs much less but still has a core group of devoted fans.. MWP has announced a Firefly RPG for laster this year, based on the series, unlike their Serenity RPG of a few years ago, based on the movie.
