Rise of the Duelist Premier Event

We are hosting the Rise of the Duelist Premier Event this weekend, formerly called a Sneak Peek. Unlike in the past, your $20 tournament entry gets you 5 booster packs of the new set and a chance to win a mini-rise of the Duelist pad or a promo card. With each tournament entry, we will give you a ticket for the drawing and a random Speed Duel pack. We will do the drawing for the mat and promo cards after 6 p.m. on Sunday and post the results on the blog and Social media. You will have 24 hours to claim your prize. If you do not, we will draw again for it.

9th Edition Warhammer 40K Starters

Games Workshop announced today three starter sets for 9th edition Warhammer 40K:  Recruit, Elite and Command. Recruit is the basic set and the two more "advanced sets" each contain the contents of the less expensive set with additional components. None appear to contain as much as the Indomitus set does. We do not have release dates or prices yet.

Remember, 9th edition rules are available for free online and, according to GW, all of your 8th edition codexes remain compatible with 9th edition, at least for now, so don't go and dump all of your 8th edition books in a rush to buy 9th edition materials as they will remain viable for the foreseeable future.

Set Boosters

WOTC announced Set Boosters coming with Zendikar Rising. It is a new type of booster with the chance, by my counting, to get up to 5 rare cards in one pack. Each pack contains a rare, a foil which could be a rare, 2 Showcase cards, which could also be rares and a 25% chance of getting one of 300 cards from The List, some of which could also be rare cards. Very doubtful you would pull that many but seems like there is a chance.

Old Tin Barn

The Old Tin Barn Bar, located out in the Mississippi Bottoms west of Gorham, had someone come in who had tested positive for COVID-19, knew he had tested positive, lied to the staff of the bar about it and now, the bar is shutting down for two weeks while the staff tests to see if he infected them and they clean the bar. If you test positive, stay home and for Pete's sake, don't lie about it just so you can enjoy a drink at your favorite watering hole. His enjoyment costs the bar two week's worth of revenue. We were shut down for a month and laid off most of the staff. It is not fun. We are reopen and have most of the staff back on duty and do not want to have to shut down again.

Transformers TCG Cancelled

Continuing its track record of not producing a second successful trading card game (see X-men, C-23, Simpsons, Netrunner, Duel Masters Xena, etc), WOTC announced today the cancellation of its Transformers Trading Card game. Writing for the game was on the wall as I pointed out last January  However, fans of the game still plan to keep it alive, rather like the Highlander TCG, with fan generated content and cards.

Vampire the Masquerade Comic

A new Vampire the Masquerade comic, based on the RPG hits the stands later this summer. Here is some info about it from the publisher, Vault Comics:

Vampire: The Masquerade – Winter's Teeth is the official Vampire: The Masquerade comic, adapted from the World of Darkness universe under license from Paradox Interactive. Vault's team worked closely with the World of Darkness team to create a canonical extension of the Vampire: The Masquerade universe, set in the current game continuity during the era of the Second Inquisition. The comics explore new settings, but everything--plot, story, and characters--are all firmly rooted in the world of the RPG. Indeed, the comics include official Roleplaying Supplements, allowing readers to play characters, settings, and scenarios from the comics in their Vampire: The Masquerade games.

ISSUE #1 SYNOPSIS: When Cecily Brine, a courier for the Twin Cities Camarilla, takes a mysterious younger vampire under her wing, she's dragged into an insidious conspiracy. Will she be able to escape with her unlife and protect her aging, Alzheimer's afflicted sister, or will she be yet another pawn sacrificed to the Masquerade? Meanwhile, an Anarch coterie investigates a mysterious killing.

Tim Seeley is the critically acclaimed writer of dozens of comics, among them Hack/SlashGrayson, and Money Shot. Dev Pramanik is best known for his work on Paradiso from Image. Tini Howard is best known for her work on Marvel's X, she is co-writing the back-up stories with her husband Blake Howard. Nathan Gooden is best known for his work with Brandon Sanderson on the epic fantasy graphic novel series, Dark One, also from Vault.

Jean Rabe on Her Newest Book

Onetime head of the RPGA, back in the 1990s, Jean Rabe now concentrates on her writing, here is info on her latest Piper Blackwell mystery

Sheriff Piper Blackwell’s first-shift dispatcher is a geek. He collects comic books, likes roleplaying games, and he’s darn good at collectible card games … he competes on pre-release night. He’s called Zeke the Geek, embracing the nickname and making the department a more colorful place. He even has a hand in solving some of the crimes, as he’s a computer nerd and uses his skills at the young sheriff’s request.
I’m a geek, and that’s why I put him in my Piper Blackwell Mysteries. I embrace my geekiness. I started playing D&D on a regular basis in college (1979 if you’re curious … I’m an old geek). I collected comic books for a lot of years, too. Collectible card games? I played for a while, but didn’t wholly embrace them; I’d rather fight dragons by rolling twenty-sided dice.
Zeke got to shine in The Dead of Summer, the Piper book I released last year. Much of the action took place at a comic shop that looks a lot like Scott Thorne’s on the inside. Scott and I go back a lot of years.
This summer, in The Dead of Jerusalem Ridge, which comes out July 15, Zeke gets to show off his dispatching skills. The night dispatcher, Teegan, who has been with the department for 15 years, gets a chapter all to herself. She’s not a geek, she’s a goth. Dresses a bit like Morticia, likes to attend conventions, dyes her hair funky shades, and she wears the kind of sandals I favor. Yeah, I’m sprinkling bits of myself in the book. Write what you know, eh?
But they’re minor characters, brightening the grimness of the mysteries and murders the department solves. They keep my fiction from getting too dark and dreary. They let me lighten the gory details. It’s a big responsibility my dispatchers have.
With great power comes … you get the idea.
I’ve been playing with ideas for the next Piper book, where my goth dispatcher will get a bigger role. But I’ve a supernatural legal thriller to tackle first, and I’ve got this outline with dinosaurs in it. I think I have too many stories to tell.

About the book: Sheriff Piper Blackwell’s three-day vacation with old Army buddies ends in tragedy. At the same time, a vile hate crime along a county road enrages her department. Their forces divided, Piper and her deputies must solve both cases before tensions boil and threaten the rural fabric of Spencer County, Indiana. Only eight months on the job, the young sheriff must weave together clues to uncover both a killer and a secret that could scar her soul.

“Piper Blackwell is a smart and capable small-town sheriff, a thoroughly modern woman who leads a colorful cast of characters in this entertaining read. Well-crafted and suspenseful, THE DEAD OF JERUSALEM RIDGE adroitly threads the needle between Cozy, Procedural, and Action-Thriller. Jean Rabe's fans⸺both old and new⸺won't want to miss this one.”
⸺ Baron R. Birtcher, multi-award winner, and LA Times Bestselling author

About the author: My home is filled with dogs and books. Lots of dogs and books. I wear worn out sandals to work every day. I'm a mystery writer living in a tiny Midwestern town that has a gas station, a Dollar General, and a marvelous pizza place with exceedingly slow service. I am always working on a new project or three. I have forty-some books published in the fantasy, science fiction, urban fantasy and mystery genres. But I'm concentrating on mysteries now. In my spare time I dabble in roleplaying games and boardgames. And at every opportunity, I toss tennis balls to my cadre of dogs.
