Firefly Games

The release by Upper Deck of its Firefly Shiny Dice and the announcement by the company that it will release a Firefly deckbuilding game using its Legendary game engine means that there are now four different companies that have released games based on Firefly:

-Upper Deck has the dice and deckbuilding games, as noted above
-Margaret Weis Productions released the Firefly roleplaying game, the company also released the Serenity RPG back in 2005
-Gale Force 9 puts out the Firefly board game
-Finally Toy Vault produces the Firefly Out of the Dark card game

No idea how this happened as typically a company gets a license for a property and then has the rights to produce all products within a category for that property. Having different companies produce games using the same license at the same time is very unusual.

Coming for Firefly

Coming in March for you Firefly Fans:

TYV23008
Firefly: Fistful of Credits
$59.99 SRP

Do the job.  Get paid.  Aim to misbehave.

Firefly: Fistful of Credits is a two-to-four-player cooperative game where players step into the boots of Serenity’s crew to pull off a series of dangerous heists and hopefully walk away with their lives and a tidy fortune! The game features 3 distinct heist scenarios inspired by the episodes Bushwhacked, The Train Job, and Ariel; each with their own highly-detailed board, tokens, and Heist card, which details unique objectives from the show that must be accomplished in order to win.

Players pair up any two of the nine crew members, forming unique teams that work with other players to collect gear, fight, and face both luck and misfortune while racing against the clock to complete the heist. Be careful: triggering an alarm, lollygagging around or sticking your nose in the wrong crate can open up a whole world of ugly - be it Reavers, Alliance, or the sinister Hands of Blue!

Fail and it’s all over...but succeeding means you and your crew walk away with more than a Fistful of Credits!

The Boardgame Trend Continues

One of the runaway hits from last GenCon, Gale Force 9’s Firefly boardgame, finally made it into distribution. Firefly, which sold hundreds of copies within tens of minutes to eager customers has done quite well since it hit store shelves and represents trend number one:  a company gets started in another area of the gaming industry moves into boardgames.

Gale Force 9 got its start producing a wide assortment of products to use in sculpting and modifying miniatures.  Until GF9 came onto the scene, miniatures games were whatever tools they could find in hardware stores or the tools available from either The Armory or Games Workshop .  Unfortunately, Alliance Distribution, which inherited the Armory line when Chessex Distribution and The Armory merged, does little to promote the line and Games Workshop sets a premium price point on its products.  Into the void between the two came Gale Force 9, offering a wide selection of basing materials and tools, with high quality display materials and decent promotion.  As time went on, the company developed serious in-stock problems but that’s not germane to the discussion.  What’s important is that a miniature accessory company has decided to enter the boardgame industry following several others that started off in other parts of the industry, then moved into boradgame development.

AEG got its start with role-playing but it is probably better known for the Legends of the Five Rings TCG.  However, boardgames have accounted for most of the company’s recent major releases. Same thing with Fantasy Flight, which has almost abandoned RPGs.  A few years have elapsed as well since Steve Jackson Games has released a print RPG, closing instead to Munchkinize the world, while Privateer, Paizo and Cryptozoic have all released entries in the deckbuilding genre., significantly removed from the areas in which they got their start. While Paizo and Privateer still remain strong in their original fields, Cryptozoic has completely abandoned its TCG base to move into traditional and deckbuilding cardgames.

Marvel Super Heroes RPG

You may have heard the announcement that Margaret Weis Productions lost/gave up the license for the Marvel Super Heroes Role-Playing Game.  It appears that sales of books in the line did not justify continuation of the licensing agreement.  According to MWP, sales of Civil War, the final supplement in the line, were decent but not large enough to justify renewing the license.  Fortunately for Disney and Marvel, movies based upon Marvel characters have proven extremely successful, thus allowing the companies to  ask for ever increasing licensing fees from companies.  Unfortunately, most RPG companies, due to the fact that RPGs are not particularly lucrative, do not have large enough amounts of capital available to purchase/renew such a license, especially when sales have not justified it.

Firefly may prove a better license as it costs much less but still has a core group of devoted fans.. MWP has announced a Firefly RPG for laster this year, based on the series, unlike their Serenity RPG of a few years ago, based on the movie.
