RIP Jim Holloway

Jim Holloway, whose art graced a number of early TSR adventures as well as publications from companies like Goodman Games and Pacesetter, has passed away.

July 4th Update

We will open at our normal 10 a.m. time on July 4th but will close at 6 p.m. giving everyone the chance to get home before dark.
We are going to make this a Free Comic Fourth. Come in during open hours and you can take 2 free comics from the tables in the front room. You may take another comic for each stamp you earn on a Castle Card that day and one more if you have a Preferred Customer Card.

We will open regular hours on July 4th and will host our afternoon Teen D&;D session from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., allowing players plenty of time to get home before dark and we will close at 6 p.m. Due to the holiday, however, the Games Workshop releases for this week will release on Friday July 3rd, along with the Magic Core 2021 set, instead of Saturday as usual.

Joker War

Interview with the Creator of Shadow Service

Cavan Scott, writer of the new Vault Comic series Shadow Service, kindly answered a few questions about the book:

1.  What is the plot of Shadow Service?

Gina Meyer is a young witch who uses her powers for good as a private detective. However, her association with gangster Gideon Quill brings her to the attention of MI666, a top secret intelligence service that protects the United Kingdom from attack. Now, Gina has a team of supernatural spies on her trail, but who can she trust?

2. Fans of what genres  would like shadow Service?

Primarily espionage and horror, although there's plenty of hardboiled noir in there too. 

3.  If I like which books, I would like Shadow Service?

If you like James Bond, Hellboy, B.P.R.D, Hellblazer, 2000AD and Stumptown you'll love Shadow Service. 

4. Why did you want to create Shadow Service?

It comes from a life-long obsession with both spies like James Bond and the Mission: Impossible team and monsters. Lots and lots of monsters. I've always wanted to combine both genres for a long time and have been thinking up stories for these characters for years. But, it was only when I hit upon Gina's story that all the ideas started to come together. 

5. What can you tell us about the characters and world of Shadow Service?

Gina is at the heart of everything. She discovered her powers when she was a kid, when magic words started popping into her head without warning. Running away from home, she was put into care but didn't play well with the other children. Now, she is a bit of a loner, with few friends (except a rat who acts as her familiar, helping find missing people on the streets of London. I love Edwin. He's one of my favourite characters in the book.)

I don't want to spoil too much about the MI666 team, but there is Coyle who has stomach-turning eating habits, super-spy Aasha who has a heart of stone and the mysterious Hex, who pulls everyone's strings from the shadows.

Organized Play

Currently we are offering D&D 3 days a week, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (for teens). We are also allowing miniatures players to use the tables in back and will provide space when two players want to play Magic, Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh or a boardgame. We are still loath to host larger events and will probably wait until July to start any organized play events again.

Confrontation Miniatures

We have seen an increase in interest in the Confrontation miniatures line from Rackham Miniatures. For those not familiar with it, this was a fantasy themed line of figures from the French company Rackham, suitable for play using the Confrontation rules system. For those unfamiliar with the line, you can see a number of the figures listed in our eBay store. They are pewter and have very, to quote a player of the game, "amazing sculpts".

Origins Cancelled

GAMA announced late last week that it had decided to Cancel both Origins online, scheduled for June 21 but also the regular Origins Game Fair, which the organization had postponed until October. GAMA felt there was too much potential disruption from the BLM movement to successfully host the online version of Origins and there was too great a chance for COVID 19 to resurge this fall to take a chance on hosting the Game Fair.

Cards Removed from Gatherer

WOTC announced today that the company will remove 7 cards from the Gatherer database and ban those selfsame cards from all Sanctioned play. The cards affected were produced decades ago and the company feels they have no place in the modern game. The cards are:

Praedish Gypsies
Stone-Throwing Devils.

D&D

If infection levels remain where they are, i.e. few or no more infections reported in the region, we will run Teen D&D this Saturday from 1  p.m. to 3 p.m. with Syd as DM.  Play will be in the back room to allow players to spread out more. Cost will remain one Iron Rations Card.

Hugh Williams

Here is more on Hugh Williams' passing. Posted with permission from Car:

I found out from Hugh's friend Karen that Hugh had heart blockages and some fluid buildup around the heart, but was too weak for bypass surgery. He was working on getting his strength back and doing much better so his death was unexpected. When he was in the hospital he was not quite calm. He was very weak but the speech problems were mostly caused by the tranquilizers they gave him. He was laid to rest at Grandview Gardens in Champaign.

Magic 2021

Magic 2021 will have a simultaneous pre-release/release weekend over the weekend of July 4th. Here is the list of cards released so far from Goldfish.
