FCBD 2027

 Please Universal and Penguin Random House, have your people talk with their people and make one consistent brand for the day.  The industry has spent some 20 years working to brand the day as Free Comic Book Day. Tossing   in Comic Giveaway Day just works to dilute that branding. Granted, most customers do not care. They just care about getting free comics and do not care if it is Free Comic Book Day, Comic Giveaway Day or Make Your Annual Appearance to Get Free Stuff Day but it certainly makes it easier on the stores and precludes the distributors from having to make different posters showing the books offered from each one. Give us one poster showing the top books or the books publishers are willing to pay to have appear on the poster.

Free Comic Book Day Results

 

Free Comic Book Day took place May 3rd. Though traffic was steady here all day, we had no lines waiting to get into the store as we have see in past years, with only two people waiting at the door when we opened. The drizzle and threatened thunderstorms may have accounted for that as well as the drastic drop in costumed customers.  Though the Marvel and DC books were popular as always, I was rather surprised to see the popularity of the Black Mirror book from Twisted Comics as it was the first book of which we ran out. Our figures showed sales up about 20% from 2024 but down the same amount from 2023, with about half the people coming into the store just scooping up the freebies.

 Since we still have extra and to wet your appitite for the events from Marvel and DC this summer, we have put some of the Knight Terrors and Spider Man / Venom FCBD books in the spinner rack in the entry way. Help youself and be sure to let us know if you want to put holds on any of these books.

Traditionally, the first Saturday of May is Free Comic Book Day. however, due to concerns about large crowds, the sponsors have pushed it back to August 14. However, since we are loath to mess with tradition, we will offer a small selection of books from previous years. Get one form coming in, one with your Preferred Customer Card and 1 for each stamp you earn on your Castle Card.

 For those interested, Free Comic Book Day in 2021 will take place on August 14, the 2nd Saturday in August. Typically the event takes place the first Saturday in May but the hope is that the pandemic will be enough under control by mid-August that people will be able to congregate in the size of crowds that FCBD normally brings, without increasing the likelihood of spreading  COVID-19

Just a reminder we will open at 10 a.m. tomorrow and close at 6 p.m. We have two tables of slightly damaged comics in the front room. You may come in and take two books for free, 1 more if you have a Preferred Customer card, 1 for each stamp you earn on your castle card and 1 for each can of Purina 1 dog or cat pate canned food you bring in.

July 4th Update

We will open at our normal 10 a.m. time on July 4th but will close at 6 p.m. giving everyone the chance to get home before dark.
We are going to make this a Free Comic Fourth. Come in during open hours and you can take 2 free comics from the tables in the front room. You may take another comic for each stamp you earn on a Castle Card that day and one more if you have a Preferred Customer Card.

Now his descendent, the mysterious vampire hunter Rosalyn Van Helsing, is teaming up with a master thief and his ragtag group of con men for a high stakes heist to rob Europe’s richest vampires. Welcome to the world of Stephan Franck’s SILVER, a globe-trotting graphic novel series that mashes up the world of Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula with action, adventure, humor, pulp storytelling and modern sensibilities.

This year, SILVER, is coming to a comic shop near you as a 4-volume set of trade-paperback graphic novels. SILVER writer and artist Stephan Franck tells us more:

SILVER begins 40 years after the events of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. We are in 1930’s New York city, where we meet a new character: conman and master-thief JAMES FINNIGAN. Finn kicks off the story by robbing a children’s charity auction, so clearly, karma-wise, he has some room to grow. The items up for auction are from the Harker family, a surname Dracula fans will immediately recognize. Then, thanks to a strange discovery at the end of Chapter One, a door will open on a new mysterious world of mortal undead danger and fortune untold. That’s too much for a thief like Finnigan to resist.

The adventure that follows is epic and super fun in the great Pulp tradition, but also an awesome opportunity to explore character. To me, con men and vampires are mirror images of one another. They live predatory, solitary lives on the outskirts of things and  don’t engage emotionally like other people do. The mash-up raises interesting questions, like “what does it really mean to feel alive?” Is it just about cheating death for a thousand years, becoming rich beyond your wildest dreams, or is there something more?

Finnegan immediately understands that, to take on the vampires, he will need a specialist. Thanks to Harker’s ledger, he locates a mysterious young woman known as “SLEDGE”, AKA ROSALYND VAN HELSING—the famed professor’s grand-daughter, and last of the Van Helsings.

Sledge carries on the family tradition of ridding the world of the vampire scourge, but it appears that she may have spent a little too much time lurking in cemeteries making sure the dead stay dead, and she’s pretty close to a complete spiritual burnout. She’s not someone easy to access, but eventually warms up to Finn’s scheme. Sparks fly as soon as they meet!

While we uncover a secret world of vampires, and while we have tons of fun with a super gothic/romantic take on DRACULA himself, SILVER is first and foremost a relentless Pulp adventure. The epic set pieces build one after the other, and the cons keep on coming.  

My hope is that some will make you laugh, some will break your heart, some will have you on the edge of your seat, and that all of it will keep you guessing until the very end!
