RPG of the Week
Since we stock a whole lot of role playing games (RPGs) and sell very few of them (we sell 5 times as much D&D 5th edition per month as we do all other RPGs combines) we decided to start talking about one of them once a week in the hope of calling your (yes you) attention to some of the fine ones out there. We will also be doing this with some of the less popular boardgames we stock as well.
This week, we feature Castles & Crusades. This RPG dates back to the 3.0 D&D boom when dozens of companies brought out all sorts of RPG supplements for D&D under the OGL. Castles & Crusades is one of the very few companies (Paizo's Pathfinder RPG is another) to still survive from that era, the tagline being "Third edition rules, 1st edition feel." Troll Lord Games has always focused on recreating the style of adventures from the early days of D&D and AD&D, before there was a heavy emphasis on plot and campaign and adventures stood on their own, rather than linking together.
While characters have skills, character class is a major focus of C&C, much as it was in early AD&D and your character class defines what your character can do. If you like D&D 3.0 (or 3.5) or the play of Pathfinder, but Pathfinder has gotten too complex and materials for D&D 3.0 and 3.5 too hard to find (it is out of print after all), take a look at Castles and Crusades.

Shelf Space
Turnover is a major factor in determining if a game or graphic novel gets restocked or not.
Turnover refers to the number of times I sell a product during a given period, either per week, per month or per year. A game or graphic novel needs to sell a certain number of times in order to justify us restocking it. If a game only sells one copy a year, it is better for us, from a business standpoint, to not restock it and put those funds we would spend on it to stock in a different product. Case in point, a number of Pathfinder paperbound books. We looked at the sales records on them and found that a good half of the ones on the shelf have not sold a single copy since the first of the year, so we marked them down and put them back in the used section with no plans to restock new copies.
The Genestealer Cults figures from Games Workshop are a good example of a product with high current turnover. We have sold several copies of the Genestealer Cults book and associated figures and have restocked it weekly since release. We will do so until sale drop off but, since the army has proven a key one for Warhammer 40,000, we will keep the line in stock.

Too Little, Too Late?
Paizo announced this week, to their venture captains first and then through a press release (it appears emailing retailers was an afterthought as we still have not received anything official from them, although some other stores have), that players in PFS games at stores would receive an in-game benefit for the table for making purchases at the store on the date of the game.
Paizo first discussed this last spring with some retailers but apparently it took half a year to implement and may be too late as many stores have reported clearancing out their Pathfinder stock. I know we don't bring in anything new except for hardback books as Paizo's 20% subscription offer has proved too enticing to most local players. Either that or no local players have any interest in Pathfinder print materials as we have sold less than 100 Pathfinder items since the beginning of the year, with the top 3 items the Bigger Flipmat, the GM Screen and the Player Folio. Everything else is 1's and 2's with almost all of the modules only selling 1, not making them worth restocking as they don't sell if we do.

No More Pathfinder Softcovers
Unfortunately, after looking at Pathfinder sales for the past several months, we have decided to discontinue ordering any new release softcover Pathfinder books for the rack. They just aren't selling. We just ran a report on Pathfinder sales since the beginning of the year and found that hardback books, character folios, DM Screens, flip mats and combat pads accounted for all sales of regularly priced Pathfinder products.
Soft cover books, with a couple of exceptions, only sold when we put them on clearance, which is not why we buy products. We will gladly bring in any books that you might want but will only stock in new hardbacks and specific flipmats from the company. There is just too much product coming out and not enough sells.

Unpainted Minis from WizKids
Taking on Reaper's Bones line head on, WizKids announced a line of unpainted miniatures licensed from Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder and featuring sculpts of characters and monsters from both lines. Here is more information:
As many of you may have already heard, only a few weeks ago we announced a brand new line of unpainted miniatures, featuring more than 150 unique fantasy sculpts, set to be released in Q4 2016. With this release, we plan to raise the bar on collectible miniatures and blaze the trail for an era of highly detailed, desirable and affordable minis. We’d like to take some time to delve deeper into what you can expect with this upcoming and highly anticipated release, and hopefully answer any questions you may have.
We plan to roll out our new unpainted minis line with a number of our distinguished fantasy licenses. Additionally, there will be a WizKids house brand of unpainted minis available in our offerings. Where fantasy licensed branded minis will focus on famous creatures and characters, WizKids house brand minis will focus on environmental set pieces to enhance our player’s and collector’s game experiences.
The unpainted minis line will not follow our historical collectible business model. Instead, it will focus on single repeat purchases, displaying the high quality minis in striking, yet visible, packaging. Customers will be able to see what they are buying on your shelves.
The collection will include characters, creatures, and even scene-building elements, all available in three types of specialty packs that will each contain a variety of sculpts (most of which will come fully assembled):
There will be a vast assortment of both male and female characters from a variety of classes and races in the initial release of unpainted minis. For example, look for generic and iconic heroes, monsters and more!

Prices tend to vary widely when it comes to unpainted minis in the marketplace. Most of our unpainted minis will be priced at $2.99-$3.99 depending on the pack, making them a great value for your customers.

Our unpainted minis will come pre-primed with Acrylicos Vallejo primer so they are ready for hand painting right out of the box. Acrylicos Vallejo is a long running industry standard, known for their specialized high-quality paints.
The unpainted minis line will not be exclusive to a single distributor. Instead, we are taking a multi-distributor approach with this release. A full list of distributors carrying the line will be announced in the coming months.
Consideration has been made in the packaging design, ensuring it is sized to fit on existing slat wall/peg systems. Packaging can also be placed on shelves, or any easily accessible location for your customers.
Here is a sample of what’s to come!

Greg Leeds Inteview
ICV2 has an interesting interview with Greg, Leeds, CEO of WOTC. One point I found striking was the planned emphasis n digital products for Dungeons & Dragons, as opposed to more print products. Given that Paizo puts out more products for Pathfinder in a month than WOTC has since the release of 5th edition.

It's Nice When Manufacturers Listen to Stores
It’s rather nice when a manufacturer asks a question of retailers,
then actually listens to what stores say
and acts upon it. It seems to most retailers that manufacturers generally ask
what stores want, listen and then go ahead and do whatever they planned to do
in the first place. The recent releases of Batman Fluxx, and Adventure Time Fluxx and the upcoming release
of Fluxx Dice by Looney Labs are one of those great examples of a publisher
reaching out to retailers, asking said retailers what should happen in a given
situation and then acting on what said retailers recommended Looney Labs do in order to make
it easier on stores and maximize sales.
The original publishing schedule for the three releases was to
release Adventure Time Fluxx in late July, Batman Fluxx in early August and
Fluxx Dice in late August. Due to a flux
in the space time continuum, or more likely a shipping and delivery problem,
the release date for Adventure Time Fluxx had to get pushed back to early
August, releasing at the same time as Batman Fluxx. So Looney Labs did what any
publisher ought to do and so few do, reach out to the people who will be
selling most of their products to the end consumer, the retailers.
Looney Labs wanted to know, should the company release both
Fluxx titles on the same day, potentially
creating a greater impact and grabbing
more mindshare from the consumer or stagger the releases a few weeks apart,
allowing each release to generate buzz on its own. Most of the retailers who
responded chose spreading out the two releases over the month for two main
reasons: 1) As noted above, spacing out
the two allowed Looney Labs and stores to spread out the impact of each
release, allowing stores to focus on and promote each separately, rather
than putting together a larger promotion
that would increase attention on the Fluxx brand but could dilute the impact of
either release on its own and 2) from a financial standpoint it is much easier
for retailers to absorb the impact of stocking both games if they can spread the “hit” to the budget
over a month rather than stocking both at the same time and having the bill for
both coming in at the same time as well.
Looney Labs did listen to the stores and pushed the release
of Adventure Time Fluxx to later in August, releasing Batman Fluxx on August 7th,
Adventure Time Fluxx two weeks later and, so as to smooth out the release
schedule even more, bumping Fluxx Dice back into early September.
It would really help stores, and overall sales, if more
companies would do both of these things:
talk to us and spread out their release schedules more for new products.
Paizo’s release schedule for Pathfinder generally calls for new products to
release the last Wednesday of each month, meaning that a Pathfinder player who wants
to pick up everything for the game has to plan on dropping an average of
$100-$200 that week on Pathfinder products. Spreading out new releases on a
weekly schedule, ala Games Workshop,
would mean: 1) new products every week
for the Pathfinder player and 2) lest of a hit at the end of the month on said
Pathfinder player’s wallet, and the store’s budget too, for that matter. Think about it, would you Paizo?
