Halloween Trick or Treating.

Come in today in costume and get candy, a comic and a sheet of Pokemon stickers. Official Trick or Treating between 5 and 7 and we will have candy, comics and Pokemon then as well.

 

Yu Gi Oh Rarity Collection

 We got in 4 booster boxes of the 25th Anniversary Rarity collection in and will be selling them as sealed boxes for $119.99. Due to our being a OTS, they will go on sale on November 1.

Halloween Party

 

We are holding our annual Halloween party today. Come in and get a ticket for the 4:30 drawing. One ticket for coming in, one if you are in costume, one with your prefered customer card and 1 for each stamp you earn on your Castle Card today.

We also have cupcakes and cookies in the back room and casual Commander play.

Halloween Comicfest

October 28th: Come in and get two free comics from the table in front. In costume, Get one more. Get one with your Preferred Customer card and 1 for each stamp you earn on a Castle Card.
 

Warhammer 40K boxed sets

 Games Workshop has announced the 6 Warhammer 40K Christmas boxed sets for the year. Typically quantities on these are capped so let us know early if you want one.

 If you are looking for a fun 2 player board game, I strongly recommend boop. A player wins by being the firt one to get 3 cats lined up on the bed. Of course, being cats, they are always pushing each other off the bed. Great game that sold out last Christmas so, if you are interested, pick up a copy soon.

Pokemon Pre-release

Had a few people asking us about pre-release for the new Pokemon set. Unfortunately, due to our Pokemon metrics, we no longer qualify for pre-release events. The Pokemon company wants us to be running and reporting in store play but since we have no one coming in during casual play time on Saturday, we have no results to turn in. If you want us to host pre-relase events again, we need people to come in and register for Pokemon causal play so that we can submit those numbers and build up to the level where we get offered pre-releses again.

Parking

 Our parking lot is open but you cannot currently exit it through the south end onto Marion or University as those exits are currently blocked by gas main replacement work.

Magic Play Boosters

 WOTC has announced another change in booster format. Starting with Murders in Karlov Manor, Draft and Set boosters will be combined into one booster format called Play Boosters. Play Boosters will offer the card treatments and types found in the Set booster with the quantity and assortment found in Draft boosters, essentially allowing drafting and sealed deck play with Set boosters, which was not possible before. Another change is the addition of "Special Guest" cards, a set of 10 reprint cards, thematically appropriate added to The List with new art.

Since Play boosters will debut with Murders, expect the pre-release for that set to run more, as Set boosters currently run a buck or 2 higher than draft do.

Lorcana

 We received one display of Lorcana Decks and one of Lorcana boosters today. We are holding the box of boosters back for purchase by those who play in our Wednesday Lorcana League but the decks are out on the shelf. Each comes with one pre-constructed deck and one Chapter 1 booster.

Doctor Who Commander

 Looks as if we  got cut back severely on our orders of the Doctor Who Universes Beyond set as we are getting 3 displays of decsk and 3 displays of Collector boosters. On sale October 13.

Banned Books

 We are seeing quite a bit of back and forth discussion on one of our Facebook posts regarding Banned Books Week. Apparently, some people are convinced if a book is challenged or banned, it contains obscene material.  That is not always the case as books such as The Grapes of Wrath, Catcher in the Rye, Go Ask Alice and To Kill a Mockingbird rank among those that have been challenged or banned at one time or another. In the graphic novel area, both Killing Joke, for its implication of rape, and Watchment, for its depictions of violance, have both been challenged and banned. The thing about challenging a book to pull it from the shelves, is the Streisand Effect, which  causes people to do the very thing you do not want them to do. 

Thanks to the Streisand Effect,  a Tennessee school board vote to pull Maus from the shelves increased the sales of the book exponentially. We sold more copies of Maus in 2022 than we had in the previous decade.

In general, the best thing to do with a book that you find objectionable is to not read it, and not let your children read it and maybe ask someone like a librarian to look it over. Making a public spectable of it only serves to call attention to it.

Haunt

 Want to see what Carbondale looks like  to a filmmaker making a horror/slasher film set in Carbondale? Then spend a couple of hours watching Haunt, which was actually filmed in Kentucky and shows absolutely no locations in Carbondale. Even the establishing shot, showing "campus housing", does not show a recognizable street in the city.

B!F Bam Boom Comics

Met a small press comic publisher at Archon and brought in their initial line of comics. B!ff Bam Boom has 3 super team books, one space action book and one super hero book. We have 2 signed copies each of all of their books at $4.99 each or $9.99 for the graphic novel.
